Hello Sound School! We have a special announcement from SAGA. This year, unfortunately, Halloween doesn't fall on a weekday, so we won't exactly be able to celebrate it all together at school. However, what if we did something else that's fun instead? This year, the SAGA members have picked out daily themes every single day of the week before Halloween (October 26th- 30th), so get ready to wear them to show your school spirit!

Today, the African American/Black & Puerto Rican/Latino Studies class and MOSAIC bring you our first installment of Hispanic and Latino Heritage Month storytelling. Stay tuned for more in the coming weeks!
When is dancing is a form of protest and resistance? When it's Bomba. Bomba, the oldest genre of Puerto Rican music and dance, began over 400 years ago by enslaved Africans on the island. They gathered to communicate revolts, share stories, and tell news. They came together to restore their humanity in the face of oppression. Bomba's African roots are blended with Taino influence, which are seen in things like the dance space and musical instruments. In Bomba music, the dancer is a storyteller and the drummer follows their lead, matching their movement, emotion, and expression. Today, Bomba continues as a way to express and resist. Loriza is a center for Afro-Latino culture. In 2020, after the murder of George Floyd, Bomba was a part of the Black Lives Matter protests taking place in Puerto Rico. Bomba continues to be a beautiful way for people to reclaim their space and show their pride. Thank you for listening and stay tuned for our topic!

Attention all students who don't want to get dehydrated during the school day. Please remember to bring in your own water bottle, which can be refilled at a water fountain in one of the school buildings. Not all buildings have water fountains that you can use without a water bottle and most teachers do not have cups to give out, so it is vital, if you want to stay hydrated, that you each have your own bottle to refill. Need community service? Love going to a FAIR? You can do BOTH if you volunteer for a shift or two helping our Rowing and Seamanship Program park cars at the Guilford Fair on September 19th and 20th.
